Today we headed off to Victory Park which is dedicated to the seige of Moscow and the Second World War. Peter had been before and taken the photos. The museum was open today so we took some time to have a look. It was a bit difficult because there was a concert taking place in the main hall, but we kept quiet and enjoyed the music while we walked around. It was very moving. There were some staggering statistics, like how many people on Leningrad (St Petersberg) died during seige, mostly from cold and starvation, but still managed to keep supply munitions and equipment to the army. The number of children who became orphans was staggering, but schools continued, even during the seige, because the children were so important to the future. Several were made 'Heroes of the Soviet Republic' the highest honour in the country, for their efforts and bravery.
Outside we saw some of the monuments including the collapsing figures which part of the holocaust memorial. The church is on the site too, though we haven't been inside yet. I think it will be beautiful in the summer when the flower beds are planted. It is an impressive space.
We took the metro back to the Arbat for lunch and then walked to Red Square and then home. Steak for dinner thanks to a new meat 'room' at the local market.
Christmas productions this week and then the last run down to the end of term. Everyone is getting tired. I will be home in two weeks getting ready for the carol service. I sing in the one at St Andrew's next Sunday which gives me something for me to look forward to as Peter will have gone.
