Golden Ring Part 3 - Kostroma

Day two started with a guided tour of the Monastery of St Ipaty, which was built in the 14th century. This monastery is closely associated with two families who ruled Russia, the Gudunovs and Romanovs. The Romanovs were elected by the All Russia Council to become the new ruling family to end the Time of Troubles. A deputation came from Moscow to ask Mikhail to rule.

A Dutch stove used for heating the room covered in locally produced tiles.
(In Heidi a similar stove is described in the house in the village)

Inside the Cathedral. The doors to the Sanctuary are open as it is the end of the Easter season.

Looking throught to the 'New Territories' which was the route Mikhail Romanov took to Moscow.

After the Monastery we then went to the museum next door where old houses from the area have been dismantled and rebuilt. For those in Bucks, like the Open Air museum. Here is a selection of photos Ann took.

What a lock!!!

After the Museum we went into the city centre to see the statue of Lenin pointing out over the city. The plinth is stands on was designed for a statue to the Romanovs, but the Revolution happened and the plinth was reused.

And so our visit to Kostrama came to an end. Back to the hotel for lunch as we were off to Plyos, 35 or so kilometres away.
